AJW Graphics #2 - Space
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Andrew Wallerstein, Shadow Company
This is the second part of the portfolio of Andrew Wallerstein,
a digital artist in New York City. This package features fantastic
images of space, in the author's words, "as we might one day see
it." There are five images: Frontier1 (a modernistic pyramid);
Frontier2 (unusual, bulbous ships facing the void); Formation
(three ships flying through mountains); Planetscape (a futuristic
colony on a distant planet); Spacescape (elegant, pock-marked
planets floating in space). They're all quite evocative, and evince
a strong knowledge of graphics programs such as Kai's Power Tools:
in addition, they're appropriate to the genre, and one could easily
imagine them on the covers of science fiction/fantasy books.
Please note that you must contact the author before publishing
any of these graphics, whether in digital or printed form. I suspect
that he would supply higher-resolution (or larger) versions upon
payment of a fee: as the images included are only 72dpi, higher
resolutions would be necessary for any serious print publishing.

Alice Wonderland gfx/alice.gif
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Project Gutenberg
This archive contains 42 high-quality bitmap scans of the original
John Tenniel illustrations to Lewis Carrolls "Alice's Adventures
in Wonderland" (available in the "Electronic Publications/Gutenberg
Etexts" library). Needless to say, they make an excellent companion
to the text for which they were intended, but would also be well
placed anywhere that you'd like a sense of Victorian absurdism
in your documents.
This work has been distributed by the Project Gutenberg Association,
a non-profit organization based at the Illinois Benedictine College.
It has been entering, administering, and distributing electronic
text versions (etexts) of classic literature, mathematical constants,
graphics and other works via computer networks for over twenty
years. The work of the organization is largely supported by tax-deductible
contributions, which should be made payable to "Project Gutenberg/IBC"
and sent to:

Back To School Graphics (HyperCard)
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Charles Doe
As I write this review, it's that time of year again: school is
going back in session, and principals, librarians, and other administrators
are inking up their mimeograph machines, getting ready to turn
out a new batch of newsletters to keep students and parents informed.
But they need to hold their audiences' interest: it's time for
clip art!
Back to School Graphics fills that need, by bringing together
a collection of 22 HyperCard cards of bitmap graphics to be cut
and pasted into printed documents. The art is appropriate, although
the limitations of Paint-type graphics are apparent, the most
obvious one being their low resolution. To avoid surprises, make
sure to print out a test graphic before making it the centerpiece
of your publication!
Beware also a design flaw in the stack: explanatory texts are
called up in a window on the "Index" (table of contecnts) card,
and it's not obvious how make that text window disappear: as a
result, the index is effectively hidden by it after you've displayed
the first text. (To get rid of the card, click again on all highlighted
index selections.) But the purpose of such a stack is, after all,
the art, and there's plenty of it here to keep school administrators
clippin'.

Cool Clip Art
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: StudentClip
As long as you're looking for good clip art, why not make a download
that will support art in our public schools as well? This collection
of three student-created drawings were sent out to online services
as part of a package of 30 beautiful, usable images which show
the high level of art in the public schools. The three images
all seem to have been drawn in pencil and then scanned in: all
are presented as .eps graphics, but none of them have editable
vectors. The images are:

Dive Right In!
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Sarah Dietzmann
At the heat of summer, you'll need this graphic! "Dive Right In!"
is an envisioning of a cool, dark pool into which something has
been thrown -- or something has emerged -- leaving a perfect sine-wave
ripple as a token. Or, as the author writes, it's "a vortex with
scenes from nature being sucked into it."
Created in Photoshop and Painter, this graphic works best with

well in as few as 256 colors (8-bit).

Down The Drain GIF
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Andy Aliferis
All right! Just what the world has been waiting for: more toilet
humor! "Down the Drain" is a GIF showing two oversized, scanned
bills -- a five and a twenty -- being flushed down a hand-drawn
toilet. It's a cute image, and the bills have been nicely manipulated
to make them seem as though they're really caught in the whirlpool.
Unfortunately, the hand-drawn bathroom scene is a bit awkward:
a minimalist land with a patterned background.
The author used it as a cover design for his monthly expenses
folder -- try that at *your* workplace!

eClips - Dreidel Template EPS
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Fred Showker
Fred Showker is perhaps best known online as the editor (and chief
writer) of DT?, an electronic journal for Design, Typography &
Graphics. He also runs a small printing shop and -- in his spare
time, seemingly, creates some very nice clip art.
This image is intended to be printed, cut, folded and glued to
form the traditional Hanukkah top, the dreidel. (The word is from
Yiddish, incidentally: it means little [-el] spinner [drei-].)
The author includes some information on the dreidels history and
how to play. (There is also copious information on how to purchase
Mr. Showker's services, which can be omitted from printed pieces.)
The entire image is viewable through layout programs such as Quark
XPress, or can be edited in Illustrator 3 or later.
We recommend the prolific Mr. Showker's other works, by the way,
many of which are available here. DT? can be found in the Electronic

Laughing Death
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Steve Isaacs
Steve Isaacs is a rising star in eWorld's graphic arts field,
filling our "Clip Art and Pictures" library with fantastic pictures
such as "Neuromancer" (which is so good, ZMac Associate Editor
Scott Love has it hanging on his office wall) and now Laughing
Death. Uploaded a month before Halloween, 1994, this graphic captures
the spirit of the holiday with the artist's special flair. As
the name implies, a grinning (sneering?) face looks out at you,
its sardonic expression menacing. There's none of the blood and
gore that less talented artists turn to in order to evoke a fright:
instead, Mr. Isaacs digs deeper, and disturbs the psyche.
And hey -- do you want a disturbing Desktop as well? He's included
two versions of the graphic as a pattern which tiles excellently.

Molly In Night City (PICT)
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Steve Isaacs
Steve Isaacs, the eWorld habitue, is back with another realization
of a character from William Gibson's book, "Neuromancer". This
one is of Molly, the woman "With mirrors for eyes and blades for
fingernails." Nonetheless, Mr. Isaacs makes her look like a bit
of a glamor doll, but what the hell: it's still a well drawn pic.
Created as it was on a PowerBook 540 (!) with Painter and an Artz

Psychedelic Woman
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Eddie Evans
This is a large (14" monitor), 256-color graphic reminiscent of
the sort of special effects you might have seen on "Mod" music
videos of the early 1970s. It's a glowing outline of a woman against
a black background, her body shimmering with a Mandelbrot of neon-like
day-glo colors. Actually, when I say that it's an outline of a
woman, I'm taking the artist at his word: the form is quite indistinct.
The author suggests it would make a good startup screen. I suppose
it would, although finding other uses for it is, frankly, beyond
my creative abilities. Still, it's not a bad abstract, as long
as you don't need to find a representational form in it.

Sausalito PICT
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Christopher Smelick
A picture is worth a thousand words, and I have no intention of
writing a thousand words to describe this picture. So let's try
100 words..
This is a photo taken in Sausalito, a northern suburb of San Francisco,
located in scenic Marin County (18). The nature of the town is
captured in this snapshot, in which a green hill rolls down to
the bay, dotted with large houses and ending in a distant marina
(49). Unfortunately, the photo was taken on a rather foggy day,
obscuring one of the most eye-catching sights of the area: the
San Francisco skyline (74). In addition, it's rather badly color-balanced:
the result of cheap processing and careless (or no) treatment
in Photoshop (93).

SCAD - Leviathan (EPS)

All aboard! for another PostScript creation by Todd Arnold, a
student at the Savannah College of Art and Design. This one is
an advertisement for the "S.S. Leviathan, the largest ship in
the world." It has a certain '20s feel to it, faithfully adapting
the historical graphic from which it was drawn.
Created in Aldus FreeHand, the poster shows a huge ship coming
into dock, complete with flying seagulls and waiting throngs of
observers. It displays wonderfully on screen: my only reservation
with it is in the typography of a prominent headline. Regardless,
this is a gorgeous piece, and ably demonstrates the potential

Skull GIF
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: Andy Aliferis
This is a single image, seemingly hand-drawn in pencil or ink,
of a skull as seen from the side. It gives the impression of being
quite detailed, even though Mr. Aliferis has been spare with his
strokes: perhaps that's because the gestures are so accurate.
Strangely, I could imagine this as a distinctive desktop image,
especially for the Halloween season. (Such an image could be installed
with the ZiffNet/Mac exclusive "BackSplash", available in the
Ziffware library). The artist has left a lot of white space around
the central drawing, which would give an uncluttered and original
effect.
Quite a different image from the author's humorous "Down the Drain

It's only a single image -- I hope that Mr. Aliferis adds to the

StackArt Volume 1
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Clip Art & Pictures
Author: ArtWorks
The clip art included with HyperCard is good, but limited in scope.
That's why there's StackArt, a collection of about 75 large, attractive
bitmap images, ready to be placed in your documents. All you need
to do is copy them to the Scrapbook and paste (or import) them
into your favorite text or graphics program, and voila! An instant
eye-catcher.
One good thing about these graphics is that their size--an important
quality in bitmap (paint) art, which lessens in quality when enlarged.
(They average about three inches square, with some filling up
the entire Mac Classic-sized window.) The bias is toward animals
and woodcut alphabets, with a good helping of turn-of-the-century
cartoons and line drawings thrown in for good measure. So take

ACR Nema Plug-in 1.0 (Photshp Ext)
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Frank Owen
One of the revolutions spawned by Photoshop was the concept of
an extensible architecture: the ability to allow third-party developers
to add functionality to the program through "plug-ins". As a result,
many features have been added which would never have had a large
enough commercial base for Adobe to include: the ACR Nema acquisition
filter by Frank Owen is a perfect example.
ACR Nema is a graphic format used almost exclusively in the medical
industry, a proprietary format usually output to UN*X or DOS-based
machines. Until now, transferring these 12-bit images to the Mac
(the most likely platform for sophisticated image manipulation)
has been difficult. With this plug-in, all the user need do is
acquire the binary file (typically via a PC disk or electronic
transmission) and open it up in any program which accepts Photoshop
filters, including Color-It and NIH Image.
Note that the translation isn't perfect: because of the differing
ways the various platforms handle image acquisition, the 12-bit
image will be cut down to an 8-bit grayscale image when acquired.
Also, the plug-in will only naturally recognize files of type
"ANMM" or "ANVM", although Mr. Owen has thoughtfully included
a work-around. (Hold down the "option" key when acquiring and
the filetype restriction disappears.)
So the import is imperfect -- in fact, the author doesn't own
Photoshop himself, and the file is therefore incompletely tested.
Nonetheless, for medical imaging professionals, this freeware
utility is a miracle worker.

Bump Mapping Filter 1.0 (Photshp Ext)
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Mike Rice and Brice Tebbs
Probably the most often-used filter in the standard Photoshop
set is the Emboss feature: just look at any ad flyer for a hip
dance spot, and you'll see embossed text (over a tie-dye background,
if the club is especially retro). But the Emboss filter is limited
in its options.. and that's where Atoz's Bump Mapping Filter comes
in. While more difficult to use, you can exercise greater control
over the results, and the effects it produces are just a bit more
elegant.
Using the filter requires some knowledge of how channels work,
as it requires a fourth channel to be added to a three-channel
RGB graphic. Fortunately, the Read Me file gives a good step-by-step
example of how it's applied. And with a little practice, you'll
wonder how you ever produced party flyers without it.

Chris' Filters (Photshp Ext)
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Chris Cox
If you'd like to explore the possibilities of Photoshop filters
without having to collect them individually, this is the collection
to start with. There are 17 filters here, ranging from the subtle
(extensions on Adobe's existing filters) to the radical (a filter
called "Psycho").
The 17 filters are:
- Average - fills a region with the average color that region
- Checkers - creates a regular checkered pattern over an image
- BitShift - "shifts" the digital value of the bits around an 8-bit
circle
- Grid - puts a grid over the existing graphic
- Add More Noise - extends the usefulness of Adobe's "Add Noise"
filter
- Total Noise - replaces a region of the image with random noise
- Fractal Noise - fills a region with 1/f fractal noise.
- Plaid - an accidentally created filter, creates symmetrical patterns
- Psycho - generates and applies random color maps to RGB and CMYK
images
- UnAlias - blurs edges and corners (very useful!)
- Edge3x3 - a faster edge finder than Adobe provides
- Erode - reduces the area of dark regions within an image
- Dilate - the opposite of "Erode", enlarges the dark regions of
the image.
- Skeleton - reduces dark areas to their centers, creating a "skeleton"
- ColorKey - turns an image into a mask based on the current foreground
color.
- ChromaKey - similar to ColorKey, but using a different technique
- FastKey - makes a mask based on a single RGB value

Easy Color Paint 0.4
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Bruce Ballard
In the days before Photoshop and Digital Darkroom, applications
for editing bitmap graphics tended to be rather crude--yet expensive.
Even today, it can be hard to find a paint program you like at
a price that's reasonable. But if you're looking for a simple,
no-frills application for simple graphics needs, Easy Color Paint
(ECP) may fill the gap for you.
ECP's palette contains only a few basic tools: a paintbrush, shapemakers
for triangles, circles, ovals and boxes, line, paint, and text
tools, a marquee (selection) and a fat bits mode selector. As
with similar programs, the menu bar changes, depending on the
tool you select. Some points of the interface on this vintage
1988 program are non-standard--a "Back Up" box does what the permanently
dimmed "Undo" menu selection should do--and it's beginning to
show its age. Strangely, switching between programs may effectively
import the background program's screen into ECP: this can either
be helpful or a pain in the rear, depending on your point of view.
While it lacks many of the niceties of Kid Pix (a version of which
is available as freeware), Easy Color Paint has its own niche.

EPS Fixer 1.52 (Fat)
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: David C. Schooley
EPS Fixer repairs EPS files which have become corrupted in such
a way that their PICT preview is no longer present. While at first
that might seem like a minor detail, it's a frustratingly common
corruption, and one which can severely hamper your work: after
all, to be able to accurately position a graphic, one must first
be able to *see* it. This utility, which comes in both 680x0 and
fat binary flavors, allows you to correct this problem by (1)
building a new PICT resource if necessary, and/or (2) hacking
the PostScript code so that the parameters accurately reflect
the graphic's content.
The documentation is quite illuminating, including not only instructions
on using the application, but also technical information on how
PICT resources are created. This additional information goes a
long way in demonstrating the usefulness of the program itself:
before reading it, I never understood how bounding boxes affected
EPS display in my favorite graphics programs, or why sometimes
the graphic would appear to be surrounded by white space. In addition,
Balloon Help is available for most menu items, as is an Apple
Guide.
NOTE: Be careful when changing TEXT files to EPSF files, and vice-versa:
EPS Fixer does the hack without further warning your via a dialog
box (as would usually appear before such a fundamental change).
Version 1.3 adds creation date and creator to the placeholder
preview, fixes landscape printing bugs, and improves handling
of certain EPSI previews. Version 1.4 reads large EPS files much
faster. Version 1.5 improves AppleScript support, changes PPC
version to fat binary, has a lower memory allocation, and improves
scrolling speed. Version 1.51 fixes bug caused by multiple atend
statements. Version 1.52 makes unspecified changes.

Fract 1.0
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Bob Wiseman
The 1980s saw many changes in the field of mathematics, largely
driven by the increased computational power of computers of the
time. One of the most significant mathematical developments of
this time was the graphing of fractals, recursive functions which
grew from simple "seed" data to produce complex, organic forms:
forms so undeniably similar to natural beings that viewing a fractal
being graphed is like watching a secret of life being revealed.
Fract allows you to build your own fractals or experiment with
the 11 seeds included. Included is mutate function which, much
as in the popular Photoshop filter set Kai's Power Tools, displays
graphics of permutations based on the seed. Output can be copied
to the clipboard on pasted into any program which supports the
PICT format. There is some on-line line help, including a reference
for further reading. Black and white.

HyperPaint 1.1.1b
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Paul B. Jones
HyperCard is a terrific tool which expanded the Mac's capability--and
influence--when it was first shipped free with every Mac purchased
in 1987. Many of the tools that were popular in paint programs
were included in it, which caused some to wonder: why bother buying
a paint program? The problem was that HyperCard lacked the ability
to output self-standing paint documents, and so the best one could
do was to copy creations to the clipboard and find some other
work-around solution.
HyperPaint provides that ability. All of the usual HyperCard tools
are there, with the exceptions of the button and text field tools--both
of which are irrelevant to painting. A limited scripted language
lets you control your painting environment. Paying the shareware
fee gets you three disks full of Mr. Jones' creations, including
the amusing DollsHouse and ridiculous Flea Circus.

Illustrator 5 Goodies #14
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Bruce Bowman
Bruce Bowman, eWorld habitue and graphics specialist, has turned
his attention to collecting and editing neat little Illustrator
tricks created by himself and others. He's put these together
in groups of three to six pieces per package and made them available
as Illustrator 5 "Goodies".
This package includes a very useful new filter: "Scale to Dimensions"
from Arcane, which lets you (finally!) have precise control over
resizing. As with the two previous issues, there is also an index
to all previous Illustrator 5 Goodies in an Acrobat PDF file.
Rounding out the collection is a set of templates which make it
easier to size art for Adobe's Premiere and two Pantone color
palettes.
All proceeds from this project benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation
International, whose goal is to support and fund research on the
treatment and cure of diabetes. So pay your shareware fees early,
often and generously -- the life you save may be your kid's!
NOTE: Some type may not display on your monitor, especially if
you are using Type 1 versions of the 13 standard System fonts.
If you're having problems which result in the type "disappearing"
at magnifications greater than 50%, print the pages and study
the printouts. Be sure to check the document and page setups first,
though! They are irregularly applied throughout the Illustrator
5 Goodies series.

MandelZot 4.0.1
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Dave Platt
Art for gearheads! That's MandelZot, a program which derives graphic
representations of the Mandelbrot set. And what is that, you ask?
Well, in the words of the program's author, Dave Platt, the Mandelbrot
set is "..a fractal based on an iterative formula calculated for
points in the complex-number domain." In other words, purty pictures
that look like that rock Aunt Guinever brought back from her summer
trip to Colorado.
And what graphics they are! Glowing and shimmering--especially
with 24-bit color-- watching these works form themselves is fascinating,
albeit slow. And once formed, the fun begins with animated colors
which go through the spectrum again and again. There are dozens
of options, most of them esoteric and couched in the language
of higher math. The quote above is typical of the documentation:
intensely intellectual and jargon-ridden, but quite thorough and
well written. Many will find it impassible, but those with an
understanding of higher mathematics will be thrilled. And all
will be enthralled by the graphically manifested derivations of
the complex-number domain outside of the dwell bands.. um, I mean,
the neat graphics.
At least 16 colors or grays strongly recommended.

PanaSizer 1.0
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Ernie de los Santos
PICTs are like pigeons: they're everywhere, but it's hard to find
anything useful to do with them. Although most major programs
support them (PICTs, I mean, not pigeons), they're usually not
very easy to manipulate in any higher manner. They can be resized,
sure, but what's the point of having a four-square-centimeter
graphics which takes up 300K? PanaSizer solves this problem, by
letting you shrink PICTs down--not only on the screen, but also
in your Mac's memory banks.
The interface is simple: two windows, one of which holds your
graphic, the other one presenting a target percentage to which
you want to shrink it. (Note that this version of PanaSizer will
only shrink graphics proportionally: it cannot enlarge them or
manipulate them in any other way.) Once shrunk, the control window
displays the file's new size, number of pixels, and final percentage
of original size (useful if you shrink a graphic more than once.)
This program is certainly a one-trick pony (one-trick pigeon?),
but its trick is rather charming.

SpectraColorPallette 1.0 (Photoshop)
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Marc Lefton
Spectra Color Pallette (their spelling, not ours) is simply a
Photoshop file of color bars showing the common four printing
inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) as 100% solids and as
gradations from 0% to full saturation. It also includes solids
of the three primary mixtures: CM (blue), CY (green) and MY (red).
It works well as a handy color picker: select the color you need
with the eyedropper tool without having to go through that ugly
dialog box! It's the sort of file every graphic artist has to
create eventually -- thankfully, Mr. Lefton has done the work
for us.

String Art 1.0.2
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Graphics Tools
Author: Gloria Jacobs
Why keep a rock garden? String Art offers hours of contemplation
and creative fun--the perfect quick break from a hard day at work.
With it, your Mac screen becomes a corkboard analogy, in which
you can place colorful pushpins and run a string to create patterns,
pictures, or doodles. It's an art form which actually works better
on the computer than it does in the physical world, in some ways:
the string is always taut, and you'll never run out of pins. And,
unlike many computer-based art programs, the interface itself
is beautiful, inspiring you to doodle without distraction.
Graphics can be saved but unfortunately there's no provision for
printing or exporting them. A tip: if you'd like to use your String
Art creations in other programs, use the Mac's "snapshot" feature
(Shift-Command-3) to create a PICT of the screen, and then edit
it in a graphics program like Photoshop. But String Art's forte
lies in the way it makes your mind wander pleasantly, and in this
regard it's a complete package unto itself.

Disk Icon 7
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Icons
Author: Douglas Peterson
This collection of seven icons improves the desktop appearance
of CPUs, hard drives, floppies and SCSI devices by providing slightly
jazzed-up versions of Apple's icons. The effects are quite nice:
the metal door on the floppy shines, and the compact-style Mac
shows a menu being pulled down. As the artist points out, third-party
drive manufacturers often distribute their products with black-and-white
icons: in this age of the color Mac, why not give them some life?
Icons can be applied by cutting and pasting them in the "Get Info"
box (with System 7.0 or later), or through ResEdit (or other icon
manipulation program). However you install them, these icons are
a quick download which will immediately improve the appearance
of your Desktop. Color monitor preferred.

European Flag Icons Demo
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Icons
Author: Mark Pettus, Locust Hollow Farm
Ever wonder what tiny Andorra's flag looks like? Well wonder no
more: Mark Pettus of MRP Software has compiled a package of flags
for what he claims to be every country in Europe. (My only doubts
have to do with the reticence most people have to accepting self-proclaimed
countries as independent: what about the Flemish flag? And the
Catalan? But anyway.)
The package includes six sample flag icons: Andorra, San Marino
(!), Austria, Sweden, Bulgaria, and The Netherlands. (As a loyal
Nederlandstaliger myself, he wins my vote for including that last
one!) He also includes a screen shot of icons from many of his
packages and an order form for his works, in plain text and ClarisWorks
paint formats. The prices are amazingly low, barely covering the
cost of a diskette, and the quality of the graphics is quite high
-- try them out and see!
Mr. Pettus has also produced several other packages of icon demos,
including Student/Teacher Icons, World Flag Icons, OrganizeIt!

Flags of the World Icons Demo
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Icons
Author: Stacks by Peter
This package contains a PICT file of 45 icon-sized national flags
from around the world, an introduction to the author's shareware
package of 191 flags. He was meticulous in reproducing these artworks
for the difficult-to-manage form of the icon, and highly principled
in maintaining the flags' authority. As he writes in the Read
Me document: "Several of the icons may be of a slightly different
scale then the others. This was necessary to achieve the flag's
proper proportions as stripes, vertical lines or bars did not
always correspond with the number of pixels available."
Here's a tip: the graphics included in this demo can be used as
System 7-pastable icons, if you have an image editing program
which can read PICT images, such as Photoshop. You have to open
the PICT document, select the graphic you want, make sure it's
in a pastable form.. of you can just send the author the reasonable
fee he asks, and you'll get all 191 color icons, painstakingly
realized and conveniently carried in a ResEdit document.

floppy, and a sky blue floppy. (Or, as appeared on my screen,
a red, orange, and faded purple floppy.) He also includes a screen
shot of icons from many of his packages and an order form for

Guitar Chord Icons
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Icons
Author: James Brynildsen, Microfine Studios
"So there I was, playing "Stairway to Heaven" (my favorite song,
huh huh huh), and would you believe I forgot how to play C major?
So I looked in my reference book ("Learn to Play the Mel Bay Way"),
but couldn't find anything in there but how to play "This Old
Man." (That's my second favorite song, huh huh huh.)
Fortunately, my egghead roommate was cramming for his brain surgery
final, and he'd left his computer on while he went out into the
quad to search for, uh, volunteers to practice on. I glanced over
and -- would you believe it? -- all his icons were of guitar chords!
Fifteen of them, from C major to that funky E minor 9th! My roommate's
cool -- now I know why he gets all the gurls. Huh huh huh."

Hisham Icons 1.2
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Icons
Author: Tom Poston
Zowie! That's the only appropriate reaction to Tom Poston's collection
of icons and cursors. Just about every popular Mac application
is represented here by its own icon, in a tweaked form: formerly
black and white icons are colorized, flat icons have depth, and
special effects are added to make your Mac shine. The cursor collection
includes quite a few wait indicators, from the counting fingers
(with Caucasian flesh tones) to the spinning CD to the ever-popular
rotating globe (with each continent a different color).
The only drawback to this collection is that no icon installer
is included with the package: users must either download an installer
(such as iContraption) separately, or follow the intricate ResEdit
instructions provided. Once you get past that technical hurdle,
though, you'll be amazed by Hisham Icons' variety and quality.

Travis' Folder Icons
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/Icons
Author: Travis A. Smith
My associate, Scott Love, has just about every icon ZiffNet/Mac
carries loaded up on his desktop. From the definitive hardware
icons by Mark Simmons to the the many clever "ultradrop" folders
to Tom Poston's huge collection called Hisham's Icons. But --
to tell you the truth -- I hate using his machine. Why? Because
there's no way of telling whether that goony-bird icon is for
a folder, an application, or a document. If nothing else, why
can't icon designers make folders look like folders?
Travis Smith did just that, in this collection of over 50 super-colorful,
psychadelic folders. They're reminiscent of video images you might
see at a rave: super-saturated, blended, and ultra-hip. Created
using ResEdit and Aldus SuperPaint, all you need do is cut-and-paste

Camera Robot 1 (QT Movie)
Category: Graphics & QuickTime/QuickTime Movies
Author: Sarah Dietzmann
Remember when robots were all the rage in the '50s? Televised
reports on the progress of robotics, echoed in the press (by magazines
such as Popular Science and Popular Mechanics) fueled the fires
of ambition for all kids with a few electrical parts and a screwdriver.
Those dreams haven't died, apparently, as this QuickTime movie
by eWorld's own SARAH shows.
It's a robot's-eye view of the world, about ten seconds of footage
shot by an ambulatory robot built by her boyfriend, Dickie. Dickie
seems to be quite serious about his mechanical pursuits: the robot
first walks up to another robot (!), and then turns away to gaze
upon some cute li'l dolls. What does it mean? Might the filmmaker
be making a statement about turning away from futuristic solutions
in favor of humanity and small plastic children's toys?
I doubt it. The main focus is not on Ba-toe (the robot) or the
kewpie dolls. In her upload note, SARAH pointed out the technical
aspects of Ba-toe's functioning. She describes: "What you will
see is a PC screen running Windows with Ba-toe's camera transmitting
to a PC/TV card in the computer. In the bottom half of the screen
you will see an MS-DOS session running Ba-toe's control program
in GW Basic. Watch for commands to scroll during movie!"
Ba-toe is a tetherless robot. The computer transmits instructions
to Ba-toe using a PCMCIA I/O card and transmitter. Ba-toe transmits
his position back to the computer. You can teach him sequences
and save them to your hard drive to be performed later. P.S. For
you techies - Ba-toe also has voice command running as a TSR in
the DOS session."
And there you have it. It would have been far more interesting
had the film been made *of* Ba-toe, but seeing the world from
its point of view -- including the internal commands -- is still
of interest to other robotics specialists. No sound.

Author: Corte Madera School students
For students at those lucky few schools that can afford multimedia-capable
computers, the opportunity is being well met by teachers who encourage
them to put together presentations in multimedia programs such
as MacroMedia's Director. One such school is the Corte Madera
Middle School, in an affluent suburb of San Francisco.
There, teacher Hermoselle Robinson (listed in the eWorld member
directory as "School District Technology Specialist") has brought
forth a compilation of seven students' work, which ranges from
the silly to the ridiculous. In one, a bicycle does a neat ramp
trick; in another, a bungee jumper meets his/her fate; in yet
another, a strange beast bursts out of the Apple logo -- with
a chainsaw.
It is indeed a strange mixture, and the bitmapped graphics are
somewhat rough. But it's some vital stuff, and offers a peek at
a portrait of the artists as young students.
