Astro Chase 3D 1.0 (demo)
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: M. Scott Marcy, First Class Systems, Inc.
Astro Chase 3D looks like an exciting game: a colorful outer-space
shoot-'em-up with wild sounds, decent action and a "save the Earth"
premise to give you, in your violence, a sense of higher purpose.
The story is this: an alien species has entered Earth's section
of the galaxy and, before communications can be established, deployed
mines to track and destroy the planet. You've been sent out in
an experimental fighting ship to stop the mines and, while you're
at it, take out some aggressions on the aliens who are chasing
you.
It's the sort of thing you'll like, if you like that sort of thing.
The action is fast and exciting, the graphics are smart, and play
seems engaging. (It's hard to judge from this demo, though, as
it allows no interaction.) The demo, on the other hand, is a bit
lame: for one thing, they've indicated no way to quit out of the
thing (!). (A tip: hit the "escape" key while holding down the
option and command keys to get out.) But it's a terrific light
and sound show, and worth the l-o-o-o-ng download if you're thinking
of investing in some gamage.

ClickChange 2.0 Demo
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Dubl-Click Software
This is a demo for what looks to be the ultimate Mac customization
utility, hacking neat-o specialized effects into your Finder.
There are many such utilities available -- some of them shareware
-- but none of them are as complete as this one. The ClickChange
Demo demonstrates how the commercial product works to:
o install weird buttons in place of Apple's standard ones (similar
to Greg's Buttons)o provide a variety of cursors, including animated
oneso assign different sounds to system events, including a periodic
chime (like SuperClock)o install desktop patterns (like Before

..and much more. In the commercial world, it's similar to Now

CrossPro Demo 1.5.3
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Aspen Gold Software
If you like to solve crossword puzzles, you'll LOVE CrossPro.
In this (nearly) full-featured demo, you can solve either of two
puzzles using the program's many handy features. Among the more
interesting options are: the ability to enter word solutions of
different "certainties" (the equivalent to choosing between pencil
and ink); being able to see a variety of hints, including letter
and word "peeking" and out-and-out cheating (getting the computer
to fill in spaces for you); having available a variety of more
ethical aids, such as cycling through the alphabet to see which
letter looks right; and a variety of other options.
The two included puzzles are good, American-style crosswords.
Buying the program provides you with 370 more, enough to challenge
the ardent cruciverbalist for some time. The interface is well-done:
often when someone attempts to move a traditional game to the
computer, it becomes less fun in the process through inept handling.
Here, that is not the case. CrossPro is an unusual occurrence
of a program with an interface which is an honest improvement
over the traditional version. Addition of a dictionary would make
this program more useful and expand its market to include crossword
puzzle builders as well as solvers.
This demo version does not allow Save or Print.

CrossPuzzler Demo 1.10-demo
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Patrick J. Stevenson
Educators and others looking for intriguing ways of presenting
information will delight at CrossPuzzler, a utility which finds
ways of linking words, crossword fashion, into grids. All you
have to do is supply the word list. The puzzles it creates are
technically more suited for word finding games or European crosswords
than American-style crossword puzzles: there is no symmetry in
the solution, and not every space is filled. Still, you can make
specific grid blocks unavailable in a symmetrical pattern, and
use its imperfect answer to build a more complete puzzle manually.
One feature that's missing is a script which would try to fit
the words into sequentially smaller grids, so that you'd always
be guaranteed the smallest solution. As it is, you have to interpolate
the smallest grid through trial and error. (If the grid you've
specified is too small to fit the words, it will try every conceivable
possibility before announcing that it can't be done.) Even if
you don't use the finished crossword, it's fun to watch it run
through its histrionics, and gives you a good picture of the program's
internal word-fitting algorithm. This alone is amusing, and being
able to use the puzzles produced is as an added bonus. 22 puzzles
included. Some features, such as Save, Print, and Export are disabled
in the demo version.

FullWrite Demo 2.0.3
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Akimbo Systems
This is a functional demonstration version of FullWrite, the full-featured
word processor from Akimbo Systems. It is limited only in the
following ways:
* Document saving is disabled* All documents (except for the Read
Me files included with the demo) print with an irremovable watermark*
The powerful system of "Extensions" is crippled
Even with these restrictions, it's clear that Akimbo is onto something.
They have produced an application with features that match the
needs of its intended users. This is a word processor for *writing*,
not playing with toolbars (a la Microsoft Word) or performing
arcane grep searches (a la Nisus Writer or BBEdit).
Simple layouts are possible, featuring easily accessed column
and section-formatting controls. Book writers have reason to rejoice
as well: FullWrite supports footnotes, bibliographies, and other
needed formatting devices.
Offsetting this bounty, however, is the program's limitations.
Namely: it lacks some of the robustness of even Nisus' graphic
capabilities -- and even they are nothing to write home about.
Still, as a tool for the working writer, it fills the bill nicely.
Version 2.0.3 fixes problems that occur when using FullWrite with
AV Macs.

Icon Mania! 1.01 Demo
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Dubl-Click Software
Icon Mania! is another in a series of utilities from Dubl-Click
Software which allow you to customize your Mac. This one is an
icon designer: it allows you to edit existing icons, create your
own, or even change the default icons your system uses to show
applications, folders, and so forth.
Designs can be flipped, inverted, rotated by 90 degrees at a time,
or transformed in any of the ways common to most paint programs.
The one thing you can't do in the demo version is to save changes
that you make. As this is the only feature that's disabled, this
demo should give you a good idea of this program's functioning.

MacBreadboard 1.15
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: YOERIC Software
Every serious electronics student has to go through it sooner
or later: running circuit simulations on the space known as a
"breadboard." The only problem is, few students have the money
(or the inclination) to buy the dozens of chips, wiring, diagnostic
and testing equipment needed to do in-depth experimentation. Enter
MacBreadboard, a commercial program which offers a clean and uncluttered
space to learn chip-based electronics and wiring.
Although this demo version only includes a subset of chips available
(and only allows one chip to be on the board at once), the full
version includes dozens of chips from 13 categories, including
gates, registers, counters, and multiplexers. The board is prewired
with several useful diagnostic tools, including logic indicator
lights, output LEDs, digital counters, and a piercing buzzer.
The programming is smart and quick, and it even hides the "color"
menu when run on a black-and-white screen.
The demo version gives a tantalizing peek of the full commercial
version and, as such, is a good sales tool: the interface is beautiful.
Other programmers should take note, and learn from the quality
of its design. On this basis alone, MacBreadboard is worth downloading,
and its functionality cinches the case.

MacPager 1.0
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: CID Technologies
If you're like me, you've consolidated all of your calls, faxes
and data communications to go through your Mac and are continually
in search of good programs to give your phone system the extended
functionality of a computer. For forwarding calls to a pager,
answering system, or another telephone, MacPager gives your modem
that added functionality.
Calls coming through MacPager are logged for later reference,
and a variety of preferences can be set regarding call routing.
For example, it can be set to wait a length of time before notifying
you, send special tones to a pager or answering machine system,
or adjust for the length of an answering machine's beep tone.
In addition, MacPager will block or reroute calls from certain
numbers (if Caller ID is installed and available in your area,
and your modem can handle Caller ID codes).
All in all, MacPager is worth consideration by people who frequently
find themselves away from their phone center. NOTE: this is the

MicMac Demo 2.2.3
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Nirvana Research
The promise of Mac multimedia for the masses has not been well
realized, due mostly to the mediocre software available for such
simple tasks as voice recording, video capture, and signal manipulation.
One tool which should help speed development along is Nirvana
Research's MicMac, a sound input utility which allows you to effectively
turn your Mac into an enhanced, digital tape recorder.
Of course, a Mac-based tape recorder has certain advantages over
the traditional kind, and MicMac has capitalized on the machine's
assets well. Spots on the "tape" can be marked for later recollection,
filed, and organized; playback speed can be altered; and the tape
can be edited, to a certain extent. Also, you'll not have to switch
"tapes" very often: an hour's worth of recording fits in 13MB.
Good documentation, well organized menus, and a strong offering
of options promise a superb commercial product. A must for PowerBook-using
reporters.

except that recordings cannot be saved. Version 2.2.3 works with

Nolo's Favorite Lawyer Demo
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Nolo Press
Nolo Press is famous for their no-nonsense, get-rid-of-the-lawyer,
we'll-do-it-ourselves collection of law books. In keeping with
their goal of making law accessible to everyone, they've published
a trio of commercial programs to manage your estate: WillMaker,
Living Trust, and Personal RecordKeeper.
This demo is a play-only movie which highlights the capabilities
of each program. The user has very little control: you can only
choose which of the three packages you'd like to preview, start
and stop the film, step forward or back one frame, and change
its showing speed. Nonetheless, it gives a good picture of the
capabilities of the commercial packages: the WillMaker film, for
example, illustrates options available for residents of various
states, with or without children, and so forth.
Nolo Press' conciseness of thought comes out in this package --
as does its humor. (For example, the very name of this demo suggests
that the best lawyer is an absent one. What do you expect from
the company that sells shark-shaped "gummy lawyer" candy?) But
it's business first, and this demo should give you a good picture
of the thoroughness of Nolo's Favorite Lawyer.

Note-it Demo 1.0
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Ruben Fernandez, ComposeTel, Inc.
Note-it is the computerized version of those handy sticky notes
which, by now, cover desks in every American office. The paper
version is known as "Post-it notes", and it's spawned many imitators:
Note-it is a fairly successful adaptation of the idea of ready-anytime
notes.
These computer-based notes have their advantages: for one thing,
you can record sound onto a note and send it to other networked
users through PowerTalk, making it an effective voice messaging
system. They can contain QuickTime movies (an example of which
is enclosed), and can be read even by users who don't have the
Note-it extension.
This demo contains documents which mimic the sorts of notes created
with Note-it. It also contains a Note-it extension which is limited
in that you cannot save the contents of note-its you create. It's
worth mentioning that Note-it effectively duplicates the "Sticky
Notes" accessory of System 7.5: still, it's worth comparing the
two for their strengths and weaknesses.

PictXPrep 1.1 Demo (XTension)
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Graphic Arts Technologies
Let's face it: updating pictures in Quark XPress can be a drag,
especially if it has to be done often. And -- let's face it again
-- it usually has to be done often. The "Picture Usage" choice
in the "Utilities" menu is of some help, but what if you want
to update more than one graphic in a document? You have two choices:
you can either point and click endlessly and hope for the best..
or you can use PictXPrep.
This extension adds a submenu to the "Utilities" menu, giving
you the following options: update all modified graphics in a document,
update only selected ones (those on a given page or spread), and
update everything in the document immediately. These options can
be exercised at will, or automatically invoked whenever the file

Seymour Demo
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Picture Network International
Many of the photographs you see in advertising come not from a
photographer hired by the advertiser, but from a stock photography
bureau. The stock bureau acts as a go-between for photographers
and purchasers in a way that both parties benefit. The photographer
has a ready and perpetual marketer for their work -- through the
bureau's catalog -- while the purchaser has access to a huge stock
of images, with an increased chance of finding something appropriate.
Seymour (pronounced: See more. Get it?) is a software/stock bureau

Sun Runner Solar Info. (HyperCard)
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Keep It Simple Systems
Keep It Simple Systems has done something which is so obvious,
it's amazing that it's not commonly done already: put together
a series of solar-power packages for MessagePad and PowerBook
users, to free them from the tyranny of expensive, short-lived
batteries and intrusive power cords. This HyperCard stack details
their offerings, which range from the Sun Runner (for the Newton)
to the Super Charger, whose four panels convey enough juice to
run a color all-in-one PowerBook *continuously* (assuming, of
course, sufficient light).
The panels collect power even through windows, making this an
appropriate choice for work in the office as well as out on the
beach. They cost about the same as a few batteries: quite reasonable,
especially when you consider the savings that will be garnered
over time. The stack is generally well done, although the one
sound effect (a bell which sounds whenever you choose *anything*)
gets tedious after a while.
Whether you're a conservationist or someone just interested in
appropriate technologies, this stack will open your eyes to some
of the solar-powered possibilities that are available today.

WallPaper Light and Dark (Demo) 1.5
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Demos
Author: Thought I Could
Wallpaper is an "interior decorator" control panel for your Mac's
desktop, allowing you to create desktop patterns in up to 256

is its stability: in the words of the Read Me file, Wallpaper

Flight Commander 2 Patch 1.02
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Updaters
Author: Big Time Software, Inc.
This is an updater to bring your copy of the commercial game "Flight
Commander" 1.0 or 1.01 up to version 1.02. The following notes,
from the Read Me file, detail changes since the original release
of the program.
Version 1.01: game in progress is now saved at the end of each
turn to a file titled "FC2 Auto-Save File"; the dialog windows
that will appear during your play-by-email (PBEM) game are different
(and simpler) than the ones described in the manual, although
the general sequence of events is the same; play-by-email games
no longer crash when game is resumed from email files.; clicking
on the view button for aircraft with no radar no longer causes
an error.
Version 1.02: Program release on CD-ROM; computer pilots (and
wingmen) handle RHM guidance better than before; play-by-email
(PBEM) files now "remember" where the screen was centered, so
the player who jumps right to the Action Phase will get a better
opportunity to see the action; on-disk battle scenarios can now
be played by email (PBEM) correctly; air-to-air missiles were
flying for one more turn than their fuel should have allowed.
This has been corrected; a Harrier jet can no longer glide indefinitely
when its engine has been knocked out; the copy-protection system
was designed to shut itself off after a few games in which the
player entered the correct information from the manual (and it
previously didn't do this in some situations).

Suitcase Patcher 2.1.4p1
Category: Demos & Updaters/Commercial Updaters
Author: Symantec Corporation
If you've been having problems with the font-management utility
Suitcase on your AV Mac or with your Language Kit, apply this
patch and every problem you're experiencing anywhere in your life
will disappear.
Well, not really. But it *will* fix the following flaws in Suitcase
2.1.4:
- Opening some DAs with Suitcase under System 7
- Fixes bugs which occur when opening suitcases on 660AV and 840AV
Macs
- Makes multiple-language script font ordering compatible between
System 7.1 and Suitcase.
NOTE: Remember to save an unmolested copy of the target application
before applying this -- or any other -- patch!
This is a patcher that was release by Symantec that brings Suitcase
up to version 2.1.4p1 which was a special patch just for the 660AV
and 840AV systems. This patch must be applied to an existing 2.1.4
version and does NOT update from 2.1.3 or earlier. The 2.1.4 patcher

Academic DataManager 2.5LE
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: KalMarx Software
Academic DataManager lets you store and manage bibliographic entries,
as well as containing a host of other useful tools. You can export
bibliography entries to conform to the Manual for Writers by Kate
Turabian, MLA (Modern Language Association) format, or APA format.
In previous versions, you had to apply text styling (such as italics
and bold) yourself, but no more! Starting with version 2.0, text
is exported as RTF (Rich Text Format), which appears correctly
when interpreted by many word processors.
Starting with version 2.5LE, Academic DataManager is distributed
through online services only via a "limited edition" version,
which only holds 15 references. The full version is available
from the author, who offers a discount for mentioning ZiffNet
until December 15, 1994, and accepts credit cards. NOTE: ZiffNet
is not associated with the author other than carrying his file.

Aspersion Demo (TT & PS)
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: Donald Synstelien, Synstelien Designs
You spend all day going blind by staring into a computer screen
-- now make your readers go blind, too! With Aspersion, the advantages
of high-quality print technology are thrown to the wind as type
becomes pixillated, fuzzy, and a little bit paranoid. The author
calls it a "cool, digital grunge typeface": I call it plain wacky.
Note that this is a demo version of the font, with several key
letters (such as "e") omitted. A second, encrypted archive is
enclosed in the one you download: to use the whole font, you must
send your shareware registration fee (10 measlies) and the author
will give you the code needed to unlock the archive. The "demo"
version is a TrueType font: the full version includes both TrueType
and PostScript. Make sure you throw away the demo version after
unlocking the full version, or the TrueType font may not work
properly. (The author says it has something to do with Font ID
numbers. Go figure.)
Because this archive contains all this GoodStuff (TM), it's quite
a big download for a font: about 300K. The catalog-cum-newsletter
is gorgeous, though, and worth the time in and of itself. (Be
sure to his legal notice: it's hilarious!) And the font -- well,
it's difficult to use well, but effective at evoking that early-computer-cathode-ray-tube
sort of feel that the hip 'zines seem to love so much. I tell
you, kids today..

BBS List 94.08 Demo 1.1 (FM Pro)
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: Greg Dingler
From time to time, ZiffNet/Mac receives information from the sysop
(system operator) of a BBS (Bulletin Board Service), asking that
we publicize their board. Occasionally, a more altruistic and
enterprising member will upload a list of BBS numbers, asking
that we post it. In general, we don't post such information: not
for any reasons of censorship, but because such lists are usually
text-based, limited in scope, and difficult to use.
Not so Greg Dingler's FileMaker Pro-based BBS list, which lists
almost 9,000 BBSes in the U.S. and Canada. And the usefulness
of this package doesn't stop with a name and a phone number: Mr.
Dingler has provided a suite of useful stacks, including a glossary
of telecommunication terms, a password database (to help you remember
how you're registered on various boards), and four other FileMaker-based
utilities. It even sends Apple events to launch your favorite
communications applications!
Unfortunately, this is a password-protected demo version, in which
much of the information is blocked out by red lines and the words
"Not Registered" in big, obnoxious letters. Paying the low registration
fee removes all such impediments -- well worth it for such a useful
directory.

CheMentor Demo 1.1
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: H.A. Peoples
Another entry in the field of HyperCard-based tutoring programs
is CheMentor, a three-module set of learning aids for chemistry
students in their first year of college. The three modules (Calculating
Chemical Formulae, Stoichiometry, and Practice Items) promise
to give such students a good feel for solving chemistry equations
such as "percentage composition" problems and the extrapolation
of limiting reactant factors.
This demo version is highly directed and well-notated, explaining
(rather than showing) what students would encounter when running
the full commercial version. This would be a liability, if the
explanations weren't so complete: as it is, they give enough information
to let you evaluate the program fairly. Some points of the interface
run a bit counter to HyperCard standards. For example, you press
a "more" button to display informational paragraphs on a card,
but when there are no more paragraphs to display, the "more" button
is still there: ideally, it should disappear when the choice is
no longer available. Still, it's well worth a look: it's a well
and deeply written demo, and if the commercial version lives up
to the demo's promises, it would be a good supplement to college
chemistry classes.

Civil War Battles Demo (HyperCard)
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: Stacks by Peter
Military buffs will be thrilled by the series of stacks on the
U.S. Civil War (1861-1865), a sample of which is included in this
package. For each of the battles, a complete and well organized
study guide includes biographies of the two commanding generals,
a list of divisions involved, a brief summary of the action and
-- best of all -- a re-enactment of the battle as seen from a
bird's-eye view, complete with musketfire sound effects. In addition,
the author provides copious notes on his sources of information
and a chronology of the war, giving the user a broader view of
the murderous war.
The attached stack only allows the user to see details on one
of the fifteen battles included in the full package: specifically,
the Second Battle of Bull Run. (I'll spoil the ending: Dixie triumphed.)

HyperMovie Player Demo 4.0
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: Kevin Harris, Software Perspectives
HyperMovie Player is a simple but powerful way to play QuickTime
movies within a HyperCard-like environment. All of the usual features
are there: fast forward and reverse, slider controls, play/stop/pause
buttons. But in addition to these rudimentary controls, there
are others which facilitate multimedia production, such as a "window"
popup menu to switch quickly among source movies.
The demo is disabled in that some of the more advanced features
are inaccessible until you pay the low fee. Also, no more than
two movies can be open at a time. An earlier version of HyperMovie
Player, with all features enabled, is also available in the "Graphics

In The Raindrop Demo
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: Susan Woollam and Ray Truant, Snout Books
Aww.. who ever thought water molecules could be so *cute*? Apparently
Susan Woollam and Ray Truant of Snout Books imagined them as frisky,
spiny little beasts, for that's how they're depicted in their
educational HyperCard-based book, "Aqui and Wasser in the Raindrop".
In this demo (which includes pages four through seven of the full
shareware package), we uncover the dreams and aspirations of little
Wasser to be "all the water in the world," and of its friend Aqui's
more instructional personality. The form is reminiscent of Socrates
and Plato: one questioning, the other providing in-depth answers
-- and in doing so, answering our unspoken questions as well.
The contents of this stand-alone demo aren't perfect: clarifying
notes (which pop up unexpectedly, like System 7's Balloon Help)
partially overflow their bounding boxes, and some of the scientific
explanations are a bit opaque. But the drawings are cute, the
animations are engaging, and I found myself clicking all over
the screen to find hidden surprises. I'm sure the full product
(available as an application or a HyperCard 2.2 stack) will similarly
enthuse young readers.

KwikInvoicer 1.2.1sr Demo
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: Handcrafted Fonts Company
O.K., so you've done the job. Now it's time to get paid! With
KwikInvoicer, you may find that task has become a bit easier,
as writing invoices becomes a simple matter of filling in fields
on a predefined template. The program, written on a HyperCard
base, works especially well with multiple invoices: "mark/unmark
for sorting/printing" features are prominent on the toolbar and
there are strong search subroutines to organize what would otherwise
be a pile of papers.
The program does seem to be somewhat single-minded in its purpose:
only three sorts of forms can be generated (invoice, receipt,
and past-due notice), and their formats can't be significantly
changed. However, this inflexibility isn't necessarily a drawback:
in this way, KwikInvoicer is really geared toward end users who
don't want to have to mess with designing new forms. The fact
that all of the menu choices have command-key equivalents confirms
this impression.
So if you're looking for a more thorough database and form design
program, you may want to look elsewhere. But if you need a good,
give-it-to-me, no-questions-asked invoice generator then KwikInvoicer
is for you.

LinksWare Demo 3.1.1
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: Tracy Valleau
Okay. So you have a whole bunch of text files you want to organize
into an interactive reference book. So what do you do? Well, you
could do it in HyperCard, like thousands of other people--and
run into the same problems they have concerning its quirky interface,
annoying limits on imported file formats and frustrating privileges
setup. Or, you could try LinksWare, an application specially made
for your task.
LinksWare does one thing and one thing only: it creates links
between files, usually between a chief text document and a cast
of supporting files. The interface is sparse and intuitive: click
on "add link," click on the word or phrase to be linked, click
on the file to be linked to, and that's it. When a reader comes
across that word and clicks on it later on, the file will be automatically
displayed. Best of all, virtually all file formats are supported:
PICTs, PC-created Microsoft Word files, compressed and uncompressed
sounds, QuickTime movies, a slew of text formats (using Claris'
XTND utility, included), and a whole bunch of formats I've never
heard of before and hope never to meet. This demo version only
allows you to make four links--not enough for even the simplest
application--but that's enough to demonstrate that LinksWare is
a clear winner for hypertext scripting.
Version 3.1 is a significant update from 3.0.4, with dozens of
improvements. Among them are: support for MacInTalk, expanded
link flexibility, and a removal of several limits. Version 3.1.1
fixes bugs.

My Calendar DA Demo 3.4.2
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: David A. Bailey
Fans of the recently commercialized PIM "GMS Calendar" will appreciate
the interface to David Bailey's "My Calendar", a desk accessory
which shows yearly and monthly plans.
In either calendar, notes are stored by clicking on the date.
Here the implementation differs: in the monthly calendar, the
note is displayed on the date, whereas in the yearly calendar,
dates with notes on them become highlighted. The monthly calendar,
however, has a feature which makes it an excellent candidate for
placement in your Startup Items folder under System 7: it will
flash today's notes on the screen upon launching.
Execution is incredibly fast: the monthly My Calendar can crank
out dozens of calendars per second. It's not perfect, but this
suite is a nice little item to keep on your desktop.
Includes online help and self printing documentation. Version
3.4 allows the use of "banners" (events which occur over a period
of several days) and prints in color on a color printer. Version
3.4.1 overcomes a bug in 3.4 which made it incompatible with System
7.5 and some AV Macs, and includes other updates available only
in the registered version. Version 3.4.2 fixes a few bugs and
improves the interface.

PhoneBook 2.0
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: Doug Deal, DugWare
PhoneBook is a set of FileMaker Pro layouts and scripts for that
most-used application of database programs: a phone/address book.
While there are many such templates around, the strength of this
one lies in its many button-accessible scripts, which allow you
to jump between different methods of keeping information. For
example, while it's possible to look at the full record (which
includes both business and home addresses), clicking on the "Business
Directory" button finds only those records which you've defined
as being business contacts and displays the business address of
those records. Should you want the home addresses of those contacts,
they're only a click away.
The demoware version restricts users to eight records, but don't
fret: all it takes to get the full, unrestricted version is a
postcard or piece of e-mail. (Donations are always welcome, of
course, and the author has a special offer for anyone who can
offer him a good summer internship in chemical engineering.) The
use of type is a bit off, but in a perfect world, this is a template
which would have been included with FileMaker: useful, simple,
and good-looking.

PortfolioMaker 1.0 Demo
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: The Center for Research in Instructional Technology
PortfolioMaker follows an old truism about presentation packages:
less is more. So while traditional photographers and artists back
their work with distraction-free black board, PortfolioMaker gives
their electronic counterparts a clean, HyperCard-like board on
which to show their work. It creates a self-running application
which presents the work in a format that's perfect for giving
to art directors, ad agencies, curators and others who need an
overview of your work in an easy-to-carry, easy-to-consider format.
This demo package includes a portfolio as it might arrive at a
reviewer's desk: 10 color photographs by Greg Pease in a package
small enough to fit on a floppy disk. Only the browsing tools
are available in the demo version; the Authoring Tools menu is
only available in the commercial package. The demo does, however,
give you a good idea of how your artwork could be effectively

PowerPOS Demo 2.2 (FM Pro)
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: New Perspective
If you run a business in which product is king, you've probably
run into inventory tracking problems. PowerPOS, a suite of linked
FileMaker Pro databases, promises to take some of the worry away
with dozens of scripts, buttons and layouts to make record-keeping
easy.
Until you pay the steep shareware fee, you'll not be able to use
these fourteen databases for anything useful: they're password-protected
to disallow data entry. You will be able to see, however, the
wide range of functions PowerPOS provides, including form letters,
spreadsheets, profit calculations, purchase orders and much more.
The implementation is a little strange in places -- the help functions
feature fake "sticky notes" which require their own layouts, one
per sticky -- but the overall impression is of a tool built for
use.
This is a huge suite of databases, and the price is likewise huge:
at almost $300, it's probably the highest-price item in ZiffNet/Mac's
entire library. If you need a highly sophisticated invoicing and
Point-Of-Sale system, have FileMaker Pro and are willing to invest
both the time and the money needed to master PowerPOS, you'll
want to download this demo to check it out.

TGP II 1.37 Demo
Category: Demos & Updaters/Shareware Demos
Author: John Lindal
TGP stands for "Teacher's Grading Program," and it will serve
to simplify a task many teachers find tedious. The main strength
of this program lies in its calculation features, which allow
grades to be weighted, adjusted, and totaled, with a letter grade
being generated automatically. Especially useful is the ability
to enter grades either as absolute values or as a percentage of
the highest grade possible, making scores from a test with 57
questions easy to calculate. Transition from paper-based grading
to TGP is easy: data are presented in the spreadsheet-like format
common in standard grading books, and entry is simplified by allowing
movement about the page using the keypad.
Printing options are extensive, allowing you to output raw scores,
personal grade sheets, student rosters, and a wide variety of
statistics. Balloon Help is extensive, and a two-volume set of
manuals goes to whomever registers their copy. Another incentive
to register is that TGP limits the number of class assignments
to five until you pay the $25 shareware fee.
Version 1.30 allows you to print personal reports either by assignment
or category when using the Category grading system. Version 1.37
allows negative scores for regular assignments, and allows cancelling
of import.
