What's the News from China These Days?By Tom GellerJust as nations around the world have their own two-letter country codes for domain names, so do they claim their own newsgroups in Usenet. In the list below you'll find a selection of newsgroups aimed at readers outside of North America. Many are in languages other than English, including some which used different alphabets, such as Russian and Chinese. (To read these newsgroups, you may need special software.) If nothing else, they provide a good place to brush up on your language skills -- how's your Finnish these days? The list is not exhaustive, and there are several regional hierarchies not listed. Germany, for example, has quite a few newsgroups specific to individual cities, such as Stuttgart (stgt), Bremen (bremnet) and Hannover (hannover). Also keep in mind that the items in this list represent hierarchies, or clusters, of newsgroups. For example, the swnet (SwedenNet) hierarchy contains over 20 newsgroups, such as swnet.jobs, swnet.politik, and swnet.paintball. As you can see, the codes listed below only indicate the first parts of a cluster of newsgroups. Sad to say, you may find that your Internet Service Provider doesn't carry out-of-country newsgroups, as they might not believe that anybody outside of the focus country would be intereseted in them. That's unfortunate, for the best place to find out what's happening in Chile may well be the chile.* newsgroups. Take heart: many system administrators will carry "exotic" newsgroups if asked. So ask, already!
