Why do you want another computer, anyway?

The spectrum of desire (ooh!)

From most to least demanding

  1. To produce (multi)media

    • A new, high-end Mac from Apple. Will have a G3 chip, fast bus, back-end cache, latest connectivity (Fast Ethernet), room for expansion. Also, is likely to be targeted for new developments such as DVD and FireWire.

  2. To run specific desktop applications and games

    • Could be lower-end: Depends on the application. New or used.

  3. To serve humankind (Web, FTP and local file servers)

    • Should be PowerPC, have fast storage devices and network connections. Need not have the fastest chip, though.

  4. To get on the Internet

    • Need not be PowerPC, but should have lots of RAM (for Web access) and a fast modem. With the money you save, buy a bigger monitor. See Web browsers for antique Macs.

  5. For writing

    • Can be quite low-end: A Mac SE is fine, except for the smaller monitor. PowerBooks are terrific for café writing. May need older software. See Low End Mac.

  6. Objet d'art
