* Tom's new job with GCI Group *

Believe it or not, I'm now doing the nine-to-five: As of 29 November 1999, I'm a Senior Account Executive at GCI Group.

It was funny how it happened. I decided to legitimize several businesses on 1 October by filing tax papers, registering business names, opening bank accounts and the like. At the end of that day (which was a Friday), I collapsed into my chair, satisfied and energized by the symbolic steps I had taken. I'd dug my heels in the sand: I was going to stay independent and build my business on my own.

What is it they say about "best-laid plans"?

At 1700, I got a call from GCI's H.R. person. She was looking for someone to do two weeks of contract writing. I was too busy, so I told her I'd refer a few people to her. We kept talking, and she eventually said, "You know, what we really need is an Editorial Director". I begged off it at first (after all, I was going to conquer the world on my own!), but eventually became curious enough to go in for interviews.

Two days of interviews, several phone calls and a title change later, they made me an offer and I accepted it. I now have an office downtown that overlooks the bay, an orchid on my desk and free office supplies. Woo-hoo!

I'm still doing my two community projects (OpenPPC Project and Suespammers Project), but I've cut down on private client work. But I still like to find out about interesting ventures, regardless of whether I have significant time to give to them. Please keep me informed!
